Re: Doctors should admit they dont know
This is a reply to another post! Please see the original here
Popping on here to say that I find this perspective very illuminating. With this post from Selggiw I was going to email them directly as a reply but thought it would be best that more people see & talk about this topic.
I work as a medical receptionist with -what I believe is- a quite important specialist. They work in an urgent capacity & we have urgent patients a lot of the time. Seeing your concerns makes me realize how sometimes, on this side of this problem, it is hard to not separate patient from person.
I work with many people that have concerns & are extremely anxious before seeing a doctor then, as they come out, they are booked in for another year until they see the doctor again which means just another routinely appointment. I wonder how often this happens to the patients I try to take care of in the capacity I can & how many patients my coworkers take care of have these experiences.
The main reason for making my reply public is to say, let the doctors know. You don't have to speak with the doctor directly or call them out & create conflict but letting the reception know may be another step to making the next patient that doctor sees feel a bit more heard.
Understanding is the hardest part about medicine, in every aspect of the process. Talking is the only way we can control that understanding.
I hope this doesn't come across as aggressive or faulting yourself, that is not my intention, the intention is to make more doctors aware of this problem & make a more understanding medical world.
I would love to hear more people talk about this topic & voice their opinions. It's a very hard conversation to have not just because of the emotional impact it can have on someone but also because these problems can be major & extremely personal.
I'd like to end off by saying, thank you Selggiw for speaking out, I value your voice & I'm sure a lot of other people here do too. I'm glad you found someone to listen to your concerns & I hope your have a smooth recovery :).
